Bathroom habits are often an embarrassing topic we prefer not to talk about – let alone if you have constipation. However, the problem is an extremely common one. Currently, 1 in 4 people in Singapore suffer from constipation. While each of us has different bathroom habits, most experts agree that three or fewer bowel movements per week could indicate a problem With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of 4 foods that help to prevent constipation.
- Prunes – Each prune contains approximately 1 gram of fiber. They also have fructans and sorbitol, fermentable sugars that can have a laxative effect.
- Water – Drinking enough water is important to prevent or relieve constipation. Experts recommend approximately 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.
- Flaxseeds – 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds contains approximately in 2 grams of fiber. Note that flaxseeds shouldn’t be eaten whole as they’ll pass through you without giving you any nutrients.
- Yogurt – Most yogurts contain probiotics that help to regenerate the good bacteria in your gut. This helps you to stop constipation.
