What is eczema?
Eczema is a chronic condition that causes your skin to be itchy and red. It is common among children and usually becomes less severe with age. However, it affects adults as well.
What are the symptoms?
When you have eczema, you will suffer flare-ups of itchy, dry, flaky, inflamed and irritated skin. The common areas affected are around the knees, elbows, neck, hands and scalp and causes intense itching. These flare-ups are usually triggered by allergens and the symptoms can improve for a short period of time, only to worsen again. The important thing for eczema sufferers is to resist the urge to scratch, as that can cause infections. If you notice fluid, a crust forming on your skin, or a fever, do see your doctor immediately.
What are the treatment options?
There’s no permanent cure for eczema. There are however, creams to help relieve your itching and inflammation, or to help repair your skin. Furthermore, regular moisturising with a suitable lotion as recommended by your dermatologist should be an important lifestyle habit for all eczema sufferers.
