For 77% of Singaporeans suffering from end-stage cancer, the answer was in the comfort of their homes. In a research jointly conducted by Lien Centre for Palliative Care (LCPC) and National Cancer Centre Singapore, 211 cancer patients interviewed indicated that they were willing to spend more money to spend their last days in the comfort of their own homes. It’s understandable that caring for a loved one, especially one suffering from end-stage cancer can be both physically and emotionally challenging.
Quality of life in Singapore has improved steadily over the years. However, quality of end-of-life care could do with some improvement. It’s hard to accept, but there are many cases, especially for end-stage cancer, where little can be done to improve the patient’s medical condition. The next best thing is to ensure that they are in as little pain as possible, and to allow them to live out their last days with dignity, and that could mean respecting their wishes. We understand that this could mean more pressure and stress on the caregivers. And they could do with a little help. There are days when they cannot afford to take time off from work.
