Worldwide, cervical cancer is the 3rd most common cancer type among women. No women should die of cervical cancer because it is the most preventable female cancer. It is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent with regular screening and appropriate follow-up care. Cervical cancer can be cured when detected and treated early. Though the disease is highly preventable, most women are still unaware about the preventive measures to take.
Early cervical cancer is silent. It starts in the cells of the cervix and it usually develops slowly through abnormal cellular changes known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). It is mostly caused by infection of certain strains of HPV (human papillomavirus) and the virus is commonly spread through sexual intercourse. Early detection of cervical cancer is very important and it can be screened through both a pap smear test and HPV DNA test.
It is highly recommended that women between 21 and 29 should get a pap smear every 3 years. Women between 30 and 65 should get a pap smear plus an HPV test preferably every 5 years, or a pap smear alone every 3 years as an alternative. With routine screening, it can help to detect cervical cancer early and save the lives of you and your loved ones. Give you or your loved ones the gift of live, urge them to get screened today.
